A Beginner's Guide: The Color Theory

Fashion is another form of self-expression and artistry, and just like an artist, colors, patterns, and textures have a massive role in how our art comes to life. Every fashion lover knows how hard it can be to put together an outfit when we’re on the go. It feels like the world could be ending. Sometimes we don’t know what to do with that blue top and those orange pants. With the help of the color theory guide, you will learn how to use those odd colors and become everyone’s favorite fashionisto/a.

First, let’s learn our primary colors: yellow, blue & red. These colors are the bases of the color wheel, and mixing different amounts of them creates magic!

MONOCHROMATIC

Let’s start with the basics: monochromatic, mono for short, means one, which makes most feel as though they have to stick with one boring color. But thankfully, you have this guide with our fellow Sex & The City women to show you how to appropriately perfect the monochromatic look. No matter the color, be free to explore different tones of the color or even play with different fabrics, creating a personality for your outfit! This avoids your outfit from looking lazy and thrown together. Let them know you put in effort

COMPLEMENTARY

Complementary colors are directly opposite from one another on the color wheel. These colors are usually the exact opposite of one another and make their own statement, so it’s up to you to make them harmonious. Accessories are gonna be your best friend; it’ll make the outfit make sense. As you can see, Carrie & Samantha took good note of that!

Of course, you could always use a more complex color wheel and make different pairings, but for now we’ll just keep it simple.

TRIADIC

Now we have Triadic! Triadic colors in the color wheel sit 120 degrees apart from each other. There’s also Split-Complementary who also follows the three-color trend, but the stipulations aren’t as concrete. These are the outfits that have some of the best color schemes, as they also allow you to play with your accessories. The shoes, bag, and necklace are what should be your focus when using this method. We can see Carrie & Samantha once again understood the assignment!

ANALOGOUS

Finally, we have analogous. Analogue colors are neighbors and say ‘hello’ in the mornings. These colors are found in nature and are more palatable to the eye. The colors naturally complement one another, making the outfit-making process an easy experience. I included Miranda as, in a more complex color wheel, some hues of blue can be next to one another rather than in the same family, giving another way to look at analogous outfits.

To conclude, fashion is definitely, and colors are another way to express how we’re feeling. Clothes are not just about materials; they shape how we feel, think, & live. I’m excited to see the outfits you put together, and I hope you enjoyed our first article!

Thank you so much for listening and learning! I’m not the biggest expert, but I want everyone to be able to create magic.
